Installing an Air Source Heat Pump is a relatively straightforward and cost effective method of using renewable energy to heat a home.

Air Source Heat Pumps operate very well in UK ambient conditions; in fact heat pumps using ambient air as the source of energy have been used in commercial applications: shops, bars, restaurants and offices in the UK & Ireland for many years.

However these commercial Heat Pump systems have not proven suitable for domestic installations as they require complicated installations utilising high pressure refrigerant gas piping systems within the home, unlike Air Source Heat Pumps which use low pressure hot water as the means of transferring the heat from outside the house into high grade heat and hot water within the home.

A Practical and Efficient Method of Using Renewable Energy...

Air Source Heat Pumps are slightly less efficient than Geothermal / Ground Source Heat Pumps but at normal UK winter conditions the units still deliver excellent efficiency levels.

The Air Source Heat pump extracts heat from the external ambient air and converts it into high grade heat to be used within the home. So how can a unit deliver heat into a home when it is zero degrees C outside? The simple answer is that there is always heat energy in the atmosphere or ground even down to temperatures of -273 degrees C on the Kelvin scale which is determined as absolute zero degrees centigrade.

For example, an external “cold temperature” of zero degrees C is collected by the Heat Pump and transferred into the home as high grade heat, delivered at around 50 degrees C or higher depending on the type of unit used. This is achieved using the process of refrigeration which utilises the same system to either provide heating or cooling in a very efficient manner...

For example at an external ambient of 7 degrees C, DeLonghi Air Source Heat Pumps can provide a COP of 3.4, this means that for every 1 kW of electricity used to operate the Heat Pump, the unit will deliver 3.4 kW of heat energy into the home.

When the overall project demands of a Geothermal Heat Pump system are taken into account, this Air Source Heat Pump performance compares favourably to the COP of 4.2 for a Ground Source Heat Pump at comparable temperatures. Even at temperatures of 0 Deg C the DeLonghi Air Source Heat Pumps are able to deliver hot water temperatures of 50 Deg C into the home.

This impressive performance has led to Air Source Heat Pumps being used extensively throughout Europe as a very effective means of utilising renewable energy where space, budget or the demands of the user do not allow or require a Ground Source Heat Pump to be installed.

Air Source Heat Pumps are positioned externally to the property and are connected to the internal plumbing system by two insulated pipes which run into the property. The Air Source Heat Pump is totally self contained and requires no input by a refrigeration engineer during the installation, power is connected onto the unit along with the two water pipes and the unit is ready to run.

A Straightforward and Cost Effective Installation...

This simplicity of installation allows Air Source Heat Pumps to be used extensively on a wide variety of residential projects which enable users to utilise renewable energy in a practical and cost effective basis. Air Source Heat Pumps provide heating, Domestic Hot Water and also when required Cooling to give the user complete flexibility and efficient performance to match the demands of their own property.
